The (Bhabha Pin ) Pass Trek

The (Bhabha Pin ) Pass Trek

15 June 2026

· Admin

This blog provides a comprehensive overview of the Pin Pass Trek—a legendary crossover journey that transforms trekkers as they move from the lush, verdant landscapes of Kinnaur into the stark, otherworldly desert of Spite Valley.

Trek Overview

• Altitude: 16,105 ft (4,909 m)

• Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult

• Duration: 7–8 days

• Best Time: Mid-June to September (July/August are excellent for greenery, while September offers stable, clear weather).

• Starting Point: Kafnu (Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh).

Why It’s a Must-Do

The Pin Pass is often called the "grandest crossover trek" in India. Unlike many other trails, it offers a dramatic, almost cinematic transition in scenery. You begin your journey surrounded by dense pine, oak, and birch forests, blooming wildflowers, and roaring rivers. Upon crossing the pass, you emerge into the arid, "moonscape" terrain of Spiti, with its signature maroon, purple, and orange mountains.

Typical Itinerary

While individual trek operators vary, a standard 7-8 day itinerary typically follows this flow:

• Day 1: Shimla to Kafnu (2,450 m): A scenic, long drive (approx. 200 km) to the base camp.

• Day 2: Kafnu to Mulling: A beautiful hike through forests and meadows. You’ll see the Bhaba River and potentially apple orchards.

• Day 3: Mulling to Kara: A short but stunning walk. Prepare for rocky terrain and crossing icy, crystalline streams—a classic feature of this trek.

• Day 4: Kara to Phustirang (Base of the Pass): A gradual climb toward the base, where you'll begin to see massive glaciers and the high mountain amphitheater.

• Day 5: Phustirang to Mangrungse (Pass Crossing): The "D-Day." You start early (around 5:00 AM) to tackle the steep ascent to the pass (16,105 ft). The descent on the other side is equally challenging, leading into the wide, arid landscapes of the Pin Valley.

• Day 6-7: Trek to Mudh & Departure: A final, easier trek to the iconic village of Mudh, where you experience the unique culture of Spiti before driving to Kaza or heading back.

Essential Tips for Success

• Physical Fitness: This is not for beginners. You should be comfortable jogging 5 km in under 30 minutes and have prior high-altitude experience (above 13,000 ft).

• Stream Crossings: You will have to cross icy streams, often barefoot or with specific water sandals. Listen to your trek leader, as water levels can rise during the day.

• Gear: Pack in layers. You will experience warm sun, biting wind, and sub-zero night temperatures. A high-quality rain poncho is essential for monsoon months.

• Altitude Awareness: Because you gain significant elevation, keep a strict hydration schedule (3–4 litrs of water daily) and monitor for symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
